How to split bills with roommates fairly

Sharing a home should feel simple. Here's how to divide rent, groceries, utilities, and chores in a way that stays fair as life changes — and how to stop tracking it all in a spreadsheet.

The three common splitting models

Pick the one that fits your household — you can mix them per category (rent one way, groceries another).

1. Even splits

Every roommate pays the same share of every bill. Easiest to reason about, works well when incomes and rooms are similar. Downside: it can feel unfair when one person earns significantly more or has the larger bedroom.

2. Income-weighted splits

Each person pays a share proportional to their income. Common for couples and mixed-income households. Everyone contributes to the same standard of living without one person feeling squeezed.

3. Room-weighted splits

Rent is split by room size or amenities (private bath, closet space, natural light). Bills stay even. A clean compromise when bedrooms are very different but incomes are similar.

Don't forget chores

Money is only half of it. Rotating chores — dishes, trash, cleaning — is what actually keeps a household calm. Set a rotation once and let it move automatically week to week.

Automate it with Home Hub

Home Hub is the best app for splitting bills between roommates, couples, and families: pick your split model per expense, let balances simplify to the fewest transfers, and rotate chores through your household automatically. No spreadsheets, no awkward text chains.
